A Taste of Home: 4 Soul Food Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia

Date:

Richmond, Virginia has long been a city where history and culture meet at the dinner table. Nowhere is that more evident than in its soul food scene — a living tradition of Black culinary heritage that stretches from the old Jackson Ward neighborhood to the city’s southern corridors. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, these four restaurants offer an authentic and deeply satisfying taste of the South.

Mama J’s Kitchen

Mama J’s Kitchen is a family-owned restaurant in Richmond’s Historic Jackson Ward, offering Southern and soul food cuisine in a casual, modern cafĂ© setting. The restaurant pays homage to the tradition of Sunday supper at grandma’s house, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests to enjoy authentic soul food.

When Mama J opened her restaurant in 2009, she had 10 employees. Mama J’s now employs more than 60 between the restaurant and catering business. As Mama herself, Velma Johnson, says, “I didn’t think we’d get so big.” Big it has become — the restaurant was named a semifinalist for the James Beard Outstanding Service award in 2019, and its small Jackson Ward dining room stays consistently busy with regulars and visiting celebrities alike. No celebrity, however, gets treated any differently, and that policy includes waiting in line with every other customer.

The team prepares food fresh daily on site, everything from pan-fried catfish to candied yams, macaroni and cheese, and homemade cakes and cobblers. The restaurant is particularly known for its fried catfish, frequently described as the best many reviewers have ever had, characterized by a light, crispy batter and well-seasoned fish. Desserts, especially the peach cobbler and coconut cake, are frequently mentioned as must-try items. Mama J’s is more than a restaurant — it’s an institution.

Croaker’s Spot

The name Croaker’s Spot refers to a long-ago Mr. Croaker, a Richmond native who opened a late-night joint up on 135th Street in New York during the Harlem Renaissance. His watchwords — “good food, good people, at a good spot… that’s happenin’!” — live on in the dining establishment that carries his name.

Croaker’s Spot is a beloved Richmond soul food and seafood restaurant, serving generous Southern classics, fresh fish plates, cornbread, and down-home hospitality, with roots in Jackson Ward and a legacy of soulful flavors that blends comfort, coastal seafood, and strong local identity. The menu leans heavily on the sea — bountiful plates of fried fish and oysters, crab cakes, crab-stuffed flounder, seafood chili, shrimp salad, and a “veggie fish boat” of fried fish topped with sautĂ©ed vegetables and melted cheese. Reviewers highlight the generous portions, flavorful dishes like fried fish and shrimp, perfect cornbread, and delightful desserts. For anyone who loves their soul food with a coastal twist, Croaker’s Spot hits the mark every time.

Lillie Pearl

Lillie Pearl is Richmond’s most elevated take on soul food, where heritage and high craft come together beautifully. The restaurant pays homage to Chef Mike Lindsey’s grandparents — the shade tree of the logo recalls summers shucking corn and listening to stories of a Gullah Geechee upbringing in the Carolinas, while Grandma Lillie Pearl herself is represented by the spirit of hospitality: a welcoming heart to all who came to visit, a smile that would brighten your day, and the promise that you always left her house full and happy.

Chef Lindsey translates those stories into dishes like a smothered pork chop served with smoky hoppin’ john with crispy rice, braised short ribs with collard green risotto, and an obe ata braised lamb shank with Nigerian tomato-and-pepper sauce and jollof rice. Chef Mike is also committed to helping create a more inclusive culinary community, providing mentorships and opportunities for Black chefs who lack access and resources, and is part of The Jackson Ward Collective, a local hub supporting Black Richmond entrepreneurs. Lillie Pearl is soul food as both art and activism.

Gummy’s Home Cooking

For those who want their soul food unpretentious, generous, and deeply comforting, Gummy’s Home Cooking on Midlothian Turnpike is the answer. Gummy’s has garnered consistent praise for its authentic soul food, noted for fresh, perfectly seasoned dishes that leave a lasting impression, with reviewers frequently highlighting the generous portions and well-executed comfort food staples.

The menu features soul food classics like turkey wings, yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, chicken wings, fried fish, fried shrimp, and po’ boy sandwiches. The restaurant’s atmosphere is described as welcoming and vibrant, enhanced by thoughtfully curated music and a friendly, accommodating staff that excels in customer service. It’s the kind of place where the food tastes like it was cooked by someone who genuinely cares — because it was.
